Buying Personalised Gifts Direct vs Etsy: Why It's Worth It

When you want a personalised gift, a marketplace like Etsy is often the first place you look. Thousands of shops, a search bar, reviews on everything. It is a good way to find ideas and get a feel for what is out there. But a lot of what you see on a marketplace can also be bought direct from the studio that actually makes it, and buying direct usually gets you more than you would expect.

We are Lee and Sam, and we make personalised prints, foiled keepsakes and scratch cards by hand in Hessle. Here is an honest look at what buying direct changes, using our own studio as the example. This is not a case against Etsy, which is a decent place to browse. It is a case for going straight to the maker once you know what you want.

1. You are talking to the people who make it

When you message us, you are not going through a marketplace inbox to reach a shop that might be one of hundreds a seller runs. You are talking to the two of us. If you are not sure whether a photo is clear enough for a hand-drawn portrait, or whether a long surname will fit on a print, you ask us and we tell you. Small studio, real people, and the same two names on every reply.

2. A proof before anything is printed

This is the part that matters most, and the part that goes wrong most often with a rushed order. Nothing we make gets printed until you have seen a proof and said yes. A wrong date, a misspelled name, a surname with an unusual spelling, all of it gets caught on screen, before it is on paper. When you are ordering something with your family's names on it, that one step is worth a lot.

3. Real frames, not just a file

A personalised print can mean a lot of things. Sometimes it is a digital file you are left to print yourself. What we make are real prints in real frames. Our frames are solid wood, made in the UK, in black, white or grey. The front is 1.2mm acrylic rather than glass, which is lighter, does not shatter, and is a genuine safety point if the frame is going on a nursery or a child's bedroom wall. You are getting an object, made and packed by hand, not a download.

4. Made to order in Hessle, not drop-shipped

Every order is made here in our studio in Hessle (HU13). It is not routed to a print-on-demand warehouse and posted from wherever is cheapest that week. That is why we can send a proof, tweak a layout and add the note you asked for. A hand-drawn family portrait, for example, starts at £26 and is drawn from the photos you send, with a proof before we print. You can see how it works on the Personalised Family Drawn Portrait page.

5. Your money goes to the family making it

When you buy direct, your money goes to the studio making the gift rather than to a marketplace taking its cut. We would not promise you a lower sticker price, because that is not always how it works. What it does mean is that a small family business gets the whole of what you spend, and for a two-person studio that is the difference between a good month and a quiet one. Our wedding favour scratch cards still start at 60p a guest, and our prints and foiled keepsakes cover a wide range of budgets, so buying direct does not have to mean spending more.

6. Getting something genuinely custom is easier

The best personalised gifts are the ones that could only ever be for one person. Buying direct makes that simpler, because you are briefing the maker straight away. Tell us the pet to add, the outfit to keep in, the exact wording you want. We build it around what you send and show you a proof. That back and forth is harder to do cleanly through a marketplace's standard order form, where the seller often only sees a box of text at checkout.

How buying direct works

It is simple. You pick a design or ask us for something custom, send us your names, dates, photos or wording, and we put a proof together. You check it, we adjust anything that is not right, and only then do we print. Because each piece is personalised to you, it is non-returnable for a change of mind, which is exactly why we never skip the proof and never rush it.

If you would like to see what we make, our best sellers are a good place to start, or browse gifts for her, gifts for him and our foiled art range. For a sense of how one collection comes together, our complete guide to wedding scratch card favours walks through designs, wording and proofs. Or just send us a message with your idea. You will be talking to Lee and Sam, and we will help you get it right before anything is printed.
