Milestone Birthday Gift Ideas: 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th, 50th

A milestone birthday is the one everybody says out loud. Eighteen, twenty-one, thirty, forty, fifty. The number goes on the cake, it goes round the group chat, and it turns up in every photo from the day. That makes the present harder rather than easier, because something that would be fine for an ordinary birthday can feel a bit thin next to a big round number.
We make personalised prints, foiled tickets and scratch cards by hand in our Hessle studio, and the milestone orders do read differently from the everyday ones. People ask for the year on it, or the date, or the song, or the names of everyone who turned up. Here are the ideas that come up most often, sorted by the age they suit, with the real prices from the shop.
An 18th: hand over the driving lessons
At eighteen the present is very often money towards something bigger, and driving lessons sit near the top of that list. Handing the cash over is not much of a moment. A foiled ticket is.
Our Personalised Foiled Driving Lesson Ticket is £10 for the plain white option and £11 for the coloured card options. You give us the name, the number of lessons you are paying for, and an optional message for the bottom of the ticket. Card comes in white, black or navy, and there are 32 foil colours, including gold, silver, rose-gold holographic and rainbow glitter.
One practical warning, and it is on the product page too. Dark foils on a black card do not show up well. If you have your heart set on black card, pick a holographic or a metallic so it catches the light.
A 21st: the song that was playing
Twenty-firsts are usually about a night out, and the thing people hang on to afterwards is the music. The Music Soundwave Occasion Print turns a song into its waveform, with a photo of your own above it and the song title and artist underneath. You can have the Spotify code added if you want it scannable.

It starts at £12 for an A5 print on its own and runs to £32 for A3 in a grey frame with a mount. A4 in a black or white frame is £20, which is the size most people land on.
If you would rather have the words than the waveform, we went through the lyric and Spotify prints separately.
A 30th: the first place that was properly theirs
A thirtieth often lands near a first house, or at least a first place with their own name on the tenancy. The Personalised House Map in the green leaf heart shape takes an address and draws the streets around it inside a leafy heart, with the road names still readable.
£8 gets you an email PDF if you have left it late and want to print it yourself. £10 is an A5 print on its own, A4 framed in black or white is £19, and the top of the ladder is £31 for A3 in grey with a mount.
It sits in housewarming prints and gifts, which is worth a look if the birthday and the move have landed in the same month.
A 40th or 50th: everyone who came with them
By forty and fifty the gift that lands tends to be about people rather than things. The Personalised Family Heart Connections Print sets out the names of a family in hearts that link together, and you pick the heart colours: pink, purple and blue together, or green, or purple, or black, or yellow and orange.

Same price ladder as the house map. £8 for the email PDF, £10 for an A5 print, £19 for A4 framed in black or white, £31 for A3 in grey with a mount. Grey frames are usually a pound more than black or white.
There is more in the same vein in family prints, including the stick people and welly boot designs.
When the real present is an experience
Concert tickets, a spa day, a weekend away, a bit of cash towards something. All of them are hard to wrap and easy to hand over flatly. The Happy Birthday Scratch Reveal Ticket hides the surprise under a scratch-off sticker, so there is still something to open.
You set the greeting along the top (Happy 30th Birthday, for example), the name, the message underneath, and the line that appears when they scratch. Sticker colour is silver or gold, and the foil range is the same 32 colours. It is £10 for plain white and £11 for the coloured card options.
If the surprise is a gig or a show, our piece on foiled ticket keepsakes goes through those in more detail.
The card that goes with it
A milestone gets a card as well as a present, and a plain one off the shelf tends to be in the recycling by the weekend. Our personalised birthday scratch cards are £5 in 6 x 4 and £6 in 5 x 7, on white or kraft brown card, and there is a design to suit most people: Meadow, Daisy, Flowers, Blue Dots, Red Dots and a couple of eucalyptus versions.

The full range sits in scratch cards, and there is a longer guide to personalised birthday scratch cards if that is the direction you are heading.
Sizes, frames and one safety point
Prints come as A5, A4 or A3, either on their own or framed, with a mount as an option at A4 and A3. Frames are UK-made solid wood in black, white or grey, and grey is normally a pound more than the other two.
The front of every frame is 1.2mm acrylic rather than glass. It looks the same on the wall and it does not shatter, which matters if the print is going into a child's room or up a staircase. If you are stuck between sizes, we wrote a whole piece on what size print to buy.
How the ordering works
Everything is made to order here in Hessle. Lee and Sam design each one, you get a proof by email, and nothing goes to the printer until you have said you are happy with it. That does mean personalised items cannot be returned if you simply change your mind, so the proof is the moment to speak up about a spelling or a date.
There is more on what we need from you in how to personalise your order.
Where to start
For an 18th or a 21st, start with the foiled tickets. For a 30th, housewarming prints and gifts. For a 40th or 50th, family prints. And if you would rather see what other people are actually buying, the best sellers is the honest version of that list.
